== Definitions ==
Marriage has been described as the practically universal base of the family: "The family, based on the more or less durable, but socially approved union, of two individuals of different sexes who found a household, procreate and raise children, appears as a practically universal phenomenon, present in all types of society". The spouses "are individuals of different sexes and the relationship between the sexes is never symmetrical".
Unions exist in many forms in the world. The theorists of kinship systems, as users of the current language therefore use specific terms to name the characteristics of each of them. We therefore distinguish the following concepts, which are not all exclusive to each other:
* Monogamy
If the spouses cannot contract a new marriage until the first is valid, then the type of union is said to be monogamous. This type of union is present in particular in countries of Judeo-Christian culture.
* Polygamy
It allows a person to be engaged in several weddings at the same time.
* Bigamy
This is the case of a person with two spouses.
* Polygyny
In a certain number of countries, notably African and Arab Muslim culture, but also in Mormons in the 19th century (see plural marriage), marriage can bind a man with several women, it is polygyny.
* Polyandry
Polyandry designates the marriage of a woman with several men; This type of union is practiced in some Asian countries.
