★ A LITTLE ABOUT OITNB ★
The series revolves around Chapman, a woman living in New York City, who is sentenced to 15 months in a women's federal prison called Litchfield Penitentiary (operated by the "Federal Department of Corrections", a fictionalized version of the Federal Bureau of Prisons). Chapman has been convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money to her now former girlfriend, Vause, an international drug smuggler/mule. The offense had occurred ten years prior to the start of the series, and in that time Chapman had moved on to a quiet, law-abiding life among New York's upper middle class, so her sudden and unexpected arrest seriously disrupts her relationships with her fiancé and her family.
In prison, Chapman is reunited with Vause (who named Chapman in her trial, resulting in Chapman's arrest), and they re-examine their relationship and deal with their fellow prisoners. The show often shows flashbacks of significant events from various inmates' pasts. These flashbacks typically explain how the inmate came to be in prison or otherwise further develop the character's backstory. As the series has continued, the focus on Chapman has lessened, so that many inmates form an ensemble cast with many concurrent plot themes.
Vause is the daughter of Diane and Lee. Vause's mother had worked four jobs, and her father was a washed-up rock star. Vause tracked down her father and, facing bitter disappointment, struck up a friendship with his drug dealer Fahri. He subsequently became her industry contact in a drug cartel. Vause then worked as a smuggler for many years.
Poussey has been in prison for two years at the start of the series and has four years left. Her mother died during her second year in prison.
She was named after the town of "Poussey" in North-eastern France, where her father was stationed when she was born, and often finds herself on the receiving end of mockery by the other inmates because of its alternative pronunciation.
Poussey is a good-natured jokester and is often seen with her best friend Taystee
