Aussie Animal Puzzles has been designed by a North Queensland local, see below for a brief description of each of the animals featured.

Koala

The koala is an arboreal herbivorous marsupial native to Australia. It is the only extant representative of the family Phacolarctidae, and its closest living relatives are the wombats.

kookaburra

kookaburras are terrestrial tree kingfishers native to Australia and New Guinea. They are large to very large, with a total length of 28–42 cm. The name is a loanword from Wiradjuri Guuguubarra, and is onomatopoeic of its call.

Dingo

The dingo is a free-roaming dog found mainly in Australia, as well as Southeast Asia, where it is said to have originated. It is currently classified as a subspecies of the grey wolf, Canis lupus.

Wombat

Wombats are short-legged, muscular quadrupedal marsupials, native to Australia, approximately 1 metre in length, with short, stubby tails.

Possum

A possum is any of about 70 small to medium-sized arboreal marsupial species native to Australia, New Guinea, and Sulawesi. Possums are quadrupedal diprotodont marsupials with long thick tails.

Kangaroo rat

kangaroo rats, small rodents of genus Dipodomys, are native to western North America. The common name derives from their bipedal form. They hop in a manner similar to the much larger kangaroo, although they are not related.

Bilbie

Bilbies are desert-dwelling marsupial omnivores; they are members of the order Peramelemorphia. Before European colonisation of Australia, there were two species. One became extinct in the 1950s; the other survives but remains endangered.

Cassowary

The cassowaries are ratites in the genus Casuarius native to the tropical forests of New Guinea, nearby islands, and northeastern Australia. There are three extant species recognized today. Cassowary chicks are very differently coloured to the adults.

Kangaroo

A kangaroo is a marsupial, native to Australia. Its baby is the size of a jelly bean when it is born, and it grows and develops in its mother's pouch. Kangaroos are known for their powerful legs, and all members of the kangaroo family share this characteristic of strong hind legs and short forelegs.

Goanna

Goanna is the name used to refer to any number of Australian monitor lizards of the genus Varanus, as well as to certain species from Southeast Asia. Around 30 species of goanna are known, 25 of which are found in Australia.

The white-lipped tree frog, also known as the giant tree frog, is the world's largest tree frog. This species is native to the rainforests of Northern Queensland, New Guinea, the Bismarck Islands, and the Admiralty Islands.

Red-tailed Black Cockatoo

The red-tailed black cockatoo, also known as Banksian- or Banks' black cockatoo, is a large black cockatoo native to Australia. Adult males have a characteristic pair of bright red panels on the tail that gives the species its name.

Frill-necked Lizard

The frill-necked lizard, also known as the frilled lizard or frilled dragon, is found mainly in northern Australia and southern New Guinea. This species is the only member of the genus Chlamydosaurus.

Lorikeet

Lories and lorikeets are small to medium-sized arboreal parrots characterized by their specialized brush-tipped tongues for feeding on nectar of various blossoms and soft fruits, preferably berries.
